Flames captain Joseph Kamwendo makes an emotional return to South Africa with his DRC side TP Mazembe as they face PSL champions Mamelodi Sundowns in a CAF Champions League first round tie on Saturday night in Pretoria.
Kamwendo is in the Mazembe squad set to fly out of DRC on Friday morning in a club’s owned jet.
He returns to the country he played for five seasons- four at giants Orlando Pirates and one at Vasco Da Gama between 2007 and 2011.
“It will be a great feeling to return to a country that did so much for my career,” he says.
“Of course it will not be against ‘AmaBhakaBhaka’ but I know that I will still be able to share a couple of smiles with plenty Bucs fans. “Plus, if I play, I will surely turn back the hands of time,” he adds.
The left winger believes Mazembe’s experience in continental football will work in their favour saying they are aware of what they need to do in this first leg, and are also well informed of the kind of team they will be up against.
“We know very well what we need to do when playing against quality teams like Sundowns away from home.We just need to use our experience, because we know that they will play nice football, since they will be at home,” he adds.
The four time African champions overcame sister club Don Bosco 2-0 on Wednesday night in Lubumbashi, in the on-going DR Congo championship play-offs, with Kamwendo coming in as a 72nd minute substitute.
Kamwendo joined Mazembe in November 2013 from Mozambican side Liga Malculumana. He is one of the 19 foreign based players in the 30 member Mazembe squad.
