Eagles return to the top of Super League

Blue Eagles back on top

Blue Eagles’ bid for their first TNM Super League title, appears to be on track.
The cops last Saturday returned to the top of the flagship league after beating Karonga United 3-1 at Nankhaka Stadium in Lilongwe.
Eagles now have 25 points from 11 games whereas Silver Strikers are second with 23 points from the same number of matches. MTV Max Bullets anchor the table with four points from 11 outings.
Vitumbiko Kumwenda, Stevie Msiska (own goal) and Gilbert Chirwa were on target for Eagles whereas Kwisi Kalolokeska scored the consolation goal for Karonga
Buoyed by their 1-0 win over Bullets at Mzuzu Stadium last week, Karonga coach Kondwani Mwalweni boasted that was the genesis of engaging an extra gear on their hunt for points but they returned home empty-handed last weekend after suffering miserable defeats by Eagles and Kamuzu Barracks (KB).
On Sunday Karonga lost 4-1 to KB at Civo Stadium. Karonga are now 15th in the 16-team league with six point from 11 games; a win, three draws and seven losses.
“It was unfortunate that we suffered such miserable defeats and failed to earn a single point from two games despite coming from a morale-boosting win against Big Bullets,” Mwalweni said.
Bullets only plucked a single point from possible six points following their loss to Karonga and a one-all draw with Wizards FC on Sunday.
Bullets, who were hoping for six points to narrow the gap that exist between them and runaway leaders Blue Eagles, are stuck on the 10th place with 13 points from eight games. They have won three games, drawn four and lost once.
“As defending champions, it is depressing that we failed to get three points from two games. We played well in both games but we could not utilise the numerous scoring chances we got. We will rectify the problem and we will come back stronger in our next assignments,” said Bullets team manager Billy Tewesa.
He, however, attributed their draw with Wizards to fatigue as his charges were coming from the Presidential Cup semifinal against Mafco the previous day. Bullets won the last-four match 3-0.
