Football Association of Malawi (FAM) at the weekend provided the Southern Region Football Association (SRFA) League with a K4 million rescue package for prizes.
This followed a pledge which the association made after a sponsorship deal with Nsejjere Sportswear Manufacturer fell through.
Premier Division champions Max Bullets, who earned promotion to the top-flight Super League, got K1.5 million while their runners-up Cobbe Barracks were rewarded with K750,000. Third-placed Mangochi got K500,000.
Division One champions Matamando got K500,000 with runners-up Nyambadwe received K300 000.
Fomo, who finished third, got K200,000.
Premier League Golden Boot award went to Cobbe’s MacPeter Makwale who received K40,000 for his feat so too Division One top scorer Lasten Kamuyang’gana.
Journalists Joy Khakona, who corresponds for Nation Publications Limited (NPL) and Ufulu Radio’s Sam Chigwenembe were also recognised for their outstanding coverage.
SRFA chairperson Raphael Humba thanked FAM for its timely rescue.
Max Bullets owner Max Kapanda said: “We are thankful to FAM for its intervention. We are happy that we at least we have been rewarded for our sweat. Now we have a starterpack for the Super League.”
FAM president Walter Nyamilandu said as an association they felt obliged to intervene.
“But my plea to prospective and existing sponsors is that they should honour their pledges.
“Let me also appeal to leagues to ensure that they sign contracts with sponsors to avoid being taken for a ride,” said Nyamilandu.
