Call it the Fisd Challenge Cup

Nyamilandu and Mwenechanya shake hands after signing the pre- contract

Barely two weeks after losing sponsorship for the Elite Cup, Football Association of Malawi has secured a five year sponsorship deal with Foundation for Irrigation and Sustainable Development (Fisd) for a Challenge cup for Super League teams.
The sponsorship which commences with a package of K40 million for 2016 will be renewable yearly and comes in to fill the gap left by Standard Bank who withdraw sponsorship for the Elite cup on 4th January.
Speaking during the deal’s pre-contract signing in ceremony on Monday, FAM president Walter Nyamilandu said the news comes with big relief to the football fraternity.
“When one door closes, another one opens. I am very pleased and emotional because we didn’t expect to secure another sponsorship as early as this,” he said
Unlike the Standard Bank Cup which was a top eight event, the Fisd Challenge Cup will involve all the Super League teams.
Fisd managing director Frank Mwenechanya said they decided to sustain their association with Football because the sport has the potential to become a big industry in Malawi
“Malawi has potential to produce top players but this cannot be done if there are no sponsors. We will be revising the sponsorship every year depending on changes on the economic front and adjustments will be made if necessary,” Mwenechanya further explained.
The actual contract will be signed during the launch in two weeks’ time where all details in regard to calendar of events, format and prizes will be announced
