Football Association of Malawi (FAM) general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda has been appointed as one of the scrutineers for the forthcoming Fifa elections.
The elections are scheduled for February 26 in Zurich, Switzerland where FAM president Walter Nyamilandu will also be among the delegates who will vote for a new president to replace Joseph Sepp Blatter who resigned amid a corruption scandal.
Nyirenda yesterday confirmed having received communication about his appointment last week.
“It is an honour to me personally and to the nation as a whole as only four officials from member associations have been chosen as scrutineers.
“It speaks volumes about the confidence and trust which Fifa has in FAM,” said Nyirenda.
Fifa development officer for Southern Africa Ashford Mamelodi said Nyirenda’s choice is proof of the trust and confidence that Fifa has in Malawi.
“It is not surprising because Fifa chose Malawi for the Under-15 League pilot project and then recently it was also chosen to host a high-profile course for technical directors from Southern and Eastern Africa,” he said.
A Fifa senior official assisted by a number of scrutineers, will control the distribution and counting of ballot papers.
