Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has said they are waiting to hear from Government as to when the team can regroup in preparation for the international friendly match against Uganda Cranes on July 6 which will be part of the country’s 51st Independence Anniversary Celebrations.
FAM general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda said government will meet all the costs of hosting the match.
“We were only asked by government to identify a team which we did. Otherwise it is their show Government and they will advise us accordingly,” said Nyirenda.
Although there has been no official confirmation from government, it is reported that the match will be played at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.
Meanwhile, Flames caretaker coach Ernest Mtawali has proposed Azam Tigers mentor Gerald Phiri Snr to be his deputy subject to FAM’s approval.
FAM appointed Mtawali as caretaker coach following the release of former head coach Young Chimodzi and his deputy Jack Chamangwana.
Nyirenda yesterday confirmed that Mtawali had chosen Phiri who is also his deputy in the Under-20 national team.
“We did not want to impose someone on him. He has proposed Gerald and I have since forwarded it to the executive committee,” said Nyirenda.
The FAM GS said Mtawali’s backroom staff will be announced in due course after consulting him.
Mtawali confirmed having chosen Phiri, saying he has had a good working relationship with him from the Under-20 team.
