The introduction of the National Division League (NDL) has continued to transform Malawi’s football landscape, with promoted sides Masters FC, Red Lions and Luanar Mitundu FC making a strong impression six weeks into the FDH Bank Premiership season.
The three teams, who earned promotion from the NDL last season, have quickly settled into elite football and are challenging the old perception that promoted clubs usually struggle in their first season at the top level.
Historically, teams moving directly from regional leagues into the Premiership faced major adjustment challenges. However, the introduction of the NDL has helped bridge that gap by providing a more competitive and structured pathway to the elite league.
Masters FC, formerly Baka City FC, have made the most impressive start under coach Peter Mponda. The side currently sits fourth with 12 points from six matches, having won four games and lost two.
Their four wins match the record of early pace-setters Mighty Wanderers, Silver Strikers and Blue Eagles, leaving them just one point behind the top of the table. Masters have also scored nine goals, making them one of the highest-scoring teams in the league.
Red Lions, who were crowned NDL champions in 2025, have also shown that their dominance in the second tier can translate into strong performances at the elite level. The Zomba-based side has collected nine points from six matches and has lost only once.
Their solid start included a goalless draw against FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, underlining their ability to compete against traditional powerhouses. Before losing to Karonga United in their sixth match, Red Lions had gone five matches unbeaten.
Luanar Mitundu FC, who finished third in the 2025 NDL season, have also shown competitiveness in the Premiership, collecting seven points from six matches to sit 10th on the table.
Individual players from the NDL have also made their mark in the Premiership, with Masters FC forward Hastings Ndau becoming the first player to score a hat-trick in the elite league this season, while Luanar Mitundu forward Raheem Mtondera, last season’s NDL Golden Boot winner, announced himself with a brace against Civil Service United.
Masters FC’s Enock Kaunga has also carried his scoring form into the top flight, adding goals in the Premiership after impressing during his time in the NDL.
The strong performance of the promoted sides and their players underlines the value of the NBS Bank National Division League as a proper development platform. Rather than merely filling promotion slots, the league is now producing clubs and players capable of competing at the highest level of Malawian football.
