Young Scorchers Exit World Cup Qualifiers Despite Brave Win

Malawi Under-20 Women’s National Team bowed out of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers despite a spirited 2-1 victory over Nigeria at Bingu National Stadium on Saturday.

The Young Scorchers entered the decisive encounter trailing 2-0 from the first leg but made a dream start when Sweden-based attacker Faith Chinzimu opened the scoring in the 9th minute, reigniting hopes of a comeback.

Malawi’s momentum was disrupted in the 34th minute when centre-back Maureen Kenneth was stretchered off due to injury. Linda Manda replaced her, forcing captain Laticia Chinyamula to shift deeper into defence as the team adjusted.

Chinzimu struck again in the 55th minute, levelling the aggregate score at 2-2 and sending the home crowd into celebration as Malawi pushed for a historic qualification.

However, Nigeria regained control through Oscar Precious, who scored in the 62nd minute to restore the visitors’ aggregate advantage and ultimately secure qualification.

Head coach Maggie Chombo praised her players for their determination despite the disappointment.

“We won the match, but our aim was to qualify and unfortunately, we didn’t make it. I thank the girls for the spirited performance. We have learned a lot, and it was a good campaign,” said Chombo.

Despite the elimination, the Young Scorchers’ impressive run showcased significant progress, as they pushed one of Africa’s strongest sides to the limit in their quest for a historic World Cup appearance.
