Wanderers Win First Charity Shield Title

Mighty Wanderers FC are the champions of the 2026 NBS Bank Charity Shield after edging rivals FCB Nyasa Big Bullets FC 1-0 on Saturday at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

Cameroon striker Sama Thiery Tanjong scored the decisive goal in the 48th minute to hand the Nomads their first-ever Charity Shield title after four attempts.

Wanderers Assistant Coach MacDonald Mtetemera hailed his players for the performance and said the victory has boosted confidence ahead of the season.

“I am very happy with the result and I thank the players for their effort. This win has motivated us and I believe we can do great things this season,” he said.

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Head Coach Gilbert Chirwa accepted the defeat but remained optimistic.

“We have lost the game, but the players performed well in both halves. I am confident we will improve in the upcoming matches,” he said.

Football Association of Malawi First Vice President Christopher Madalitso Kuyera congratulated Wanderers on their triumph and applauded the quality of the match.

“Congratulations to Mighty Wanderers and unlucky to FCB Nyasa Big Bullets. It was an entertaining and fair contest,” he said.

“We are also pleased with the turnout. The ticket pricing strategy helped manage the crowd effectively. I thank NBS Bank for their continued support, as the revenue generated will assist a school project in Mzimba.”

NBS Bank representative Alfred Nhlema commended FAM for successfully staging the event.

“We appreciate FAM for organising such a colourful and smooth event. As a bank, we remain committed to supporting the communities we serve. The proceeds will go towards assisting a school in Mzimba facing various challenges,” he said.
