Derby Encounters Dominate Women’s Premiership Fixtures

Silver Strikers Ladies, who were recently crowned champions of the National Bank of Malawi (NBM) Women’s Premiership after securing their 14th win of the season, return to action on Saturday with a city derby against seventh-placed Civil Service Women at Civo Stadium.

Match Week 16 has been designated a derby weekend, with several high-profile fixtures lined up across the country. Runners-up Ascent Soccer travel to Champions Stadium to face fourth-placed MDF Lionesses, the only side to have defeated the Champions in the opening match of the second round.

Another highlight will be the Blantyre derby at Mpira Stadium, where FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Women take on Mighty Wanderers Queens. The fixture mirrors the long-standing rivalry between the two clubs’ men’s teams, a rivalry that has increasingly spilled into the NBM Women’s Premiership.

The Bullets Women sit third on the table with 28 points, five clear of Wanderers Queens. The stakes are high, with Bullets aiming to consolidate their grip on third place while the Nomads push to close the gap with three matches remaining.

MDF Lionesses, on 25 points, remain close contenders in the race for third, while Kukoma Ntopwa Women, four points further back, host relegated Moyale Sisters at Mpira Stadium.

Another derby sees relegated sides MK Academy, eighth with seven points, and bottom-placed Topik Academy clash at FAM’s Luwinga Football School of Excellence in Mzuzu.

Meanwhile, Football Association of Malawi President Fleetwood Haiya has congratulated Silver Strikers Ladies on clinching the inaugural women’s national league title with three matches to spare.

“It has been a high-flying season built on hard work, consistency and belief. A truly deserved triumph. Well done, Ma Banker,” said Haiya.
