Nationwide Referees Training Nears Completion

About 400 referees have been trained nationwide as the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) moves closer to completing its countrywide referees’ training programme.

The initiative has so far been conducted in 28 of Malawi’s 31 football districts, targeting aspiring match officials at district level as part of FAM’s broader football development agenda.

The programme is being implemented in collaboration with the National Bank of Malawi (NBM) under the NBM Championship, which is being played across all districts in the country.

In addition to district-based sessions, the training was also extended to tertiary institutions, including Mzuzu University and the University of Malawi (UNIMA), further widening the pool of trained referees.

FAM is expected to complete the programme once training is conducted in the remaining districts of Chiradzulu, Neno and Mwanza.

The nationwide exercise began in November in districts such as Machinga, Mchinji and Mzuzu, before being rolled out to 25 other districts, with the programme set to conclude in January.

The initiative is aimed at strengthening the standard of officiating in Malawi and supporting the long-term growth and integrity of the game.
