Baka City Keep Pressure on Red Lions

NBS Bank National Division League (NDL) runners up Baka City defeated Jenda United 2 0 on Monday afternoon, reducing the gap at the top back to seven points after leaders Red Lions had temporarily opened a 10 point cushion with their 1 0 win over Ntaja United on Sunday in Balaka.

Playing at Karonga Stadium, bottom placed Jenda United who have only five points from one win and two draws resisted sustained pressure from the hosts until the 40th minute when Thomas Shabani broke the deadlock after being set up by Hastings Ndau.

Baka City carried their lead into the break and sealed the victory in the 75th minute through Amon Mwakitalu who finished off a Lloyd Siyeni assist.

The result keeps Baka City second on 32 points, behind leaders Red Lions on 39. Namitete Zitha sit third with 29 points followed by Mitundu Baptist with 28, Ndirande Stars with 25, Bangwe All Stars with 24, FOMO FC with 23, Ntaja United with 20, Chilumba Barracks with 19, Mchinji Villa with 18, Chintheche United with 18 and Jenda United with 5. Namitete Zitha maintained their third place after a 2 0 win over Chilumba Barracks on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Mitundu Baptist striker Raheem Mtondera extended his lead in the Golden Boot race, taking his tally to 17 goals after scoring a brace in their 3 0 win over Chintheche United on Sunday at Maliri Stadium. His performance also earned him the Man of the Match award.
