Silver Strikers Ladies Maintain Perfect Record in NBM Women’s Premiership

Silver Strikers Ladies continued their remarkable form after defeating Kukoma Ntopwa Women 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Mpira Stadium, maintaining their 100% winning record and top spot in the National Bank of Malawi (NBM) Women’s Premiership after Match Week 6.

The victory took the leaders to 18 points, five clear of second-placed Ascent Soccer, who were held to a 0-0 draw by MK Academy on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Mighty Wanderers Queens climbed to third place after securing a hard-fought 1-0 win over Civil Service Women on Sunday morning at Civo

The encounter at Mpira Stadium rekindled memories of last year’s Goshen City National Women’s Tournament final, where the two sides drew 1-1 before Ntopwa triumphed on penalties.

This time, however, the Bankers were clinical from the start. Grace Kakangula opened the scoring in the 13th minute, finishing off an assist from Yamikani Mhango.

Moments later, Deborah Henry narrowly missed a chance to double the lead, blasting over the bar after a fine turn inside the box. She made amends in the 25th minute, pouncing on a rebound after Irene Khumalo’s shot was parried by goalkeeper Emily Nkhwazi, giving Silver a 2-0 halftime advantage.

The second half was more evenly contested, with Ntopwa growing into the game and testing Silver’s midfield dominance. But the hosts struck again in the 67th minute, when Kakangula’s dazzling solo run ended with a cutback for Henry, who slotted home her second goal to make it 3-0.

Ntopwa pulled one back in the 74th minute through Kondawo Banda, whose long-range effort caught the goalkeeper off guard. Banda continued to threaten Silver’s backline late in the game, but it was too little, too late.

For her brace and outstanding display, Deborah Henry was named Player of the Match.

Earlier in the day at Civo Stadium, Mighty Wanderers Queens dug deep to edge Civil Service Women 1-0 in a closely contested fixture.

The decisive moment came in the 88th minute, when Chikondi Benjamini delivered a perfect cross that was calmly finished by Kawaga to secure all three points.

Civil Service Women started brightly, forcing two early corners and creating several first-half chances through Mercy Mkandawire, whose efforts were denied by Wanderers goalkeeper Esther Maulidi.

The second half was balanced, with both sides trading attacks. Faluma Umali’s well-taken free kick caused trouble in the Civil Service box, while Martha Cosmas, in goal for the hosts, pulled off a brilliant save in the 62nd minute to keep the game level.

However, Wanderers’ persistence paid off near the end as Benjamini and Kawaga combined for the late winner — moving the Queens to third position on the log with 12 points.

Meanwhile, the match between FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Women and Topik Academy, scheduled for Sunday at Kamuzu Stadium, has been rescheduled to Tuesday, October 7, following travel delays by the visiting side.

In Saturday’s fixtures, Ascent Soccer were held to a goalless draw by MK Academy despite dominating play at Mzuzu Stadium, while MDF Lionesses cruised to a 4-0 victory over Moyale Sisters at Champion Stadium.
