Ascent Academy Wins Central Region Women’s League

Ascent Academy clinched the Central Region FAM-Goshen Women’s League title after a goalless draw against Civil Service Women in a tightly contested match.

The champions finished the season with 39 points, securing 12 wins, three draws, and suffering only one defeat to MDF Lioness. They netted an impressive 74 goals and conceding just seven in 16 games. Civil Service Women finished as runners-up with 37 points.

Reflecting on the season, Ascent Academy head coach Thom Mkolongo said, “It was a very tough season, as in the central region there are teams that are quite good. It was 50-50 until the last day when the champion was decided, so we can say that it was a tough season.”

On dealing with the congested schedule, Mkolongo added, “It was quite a big challenge, and I told the players this was the time to show they were mature enough to play in the league. By the end of the day, the girls managed to do it”

Carol Phiri, Chairperson of the Central Region Women’s Football Association, commended the high level of competition in the league. “Our teams were hard-working, and we have watched exciting games throughout. After today’s games, we finally have our champions because we had no clue who would win the title,” she said.

Despite finishing unbeaten, Silver Strikers Ladies remained in third place, matching their position from last season. They will proceed to the national playoffs alongside Ascent Academy and Civil Service Women, who have automatically qualified for the national championships.

Ascent Academy’s Leticia Chinyamula finished as the league’s top scorer with 18 goals.
