Malawi U17 Girls win last group match

Malawi 6 (Victoria Mkwala 5′, Jean Fyson 7′ 30′ 84′, Talandira Chinyamvula 22′, Asimenye Mwanyongo 45′) -1 Namibia (Nancy Lebang 76′)

The Malawi U17 girls on Monday afternoon got their only win at the COSAFA Girls Under 17 tournament after beating Namibia 6-1 in their last group stage match.

The girls were playing for pride as they  were already out of contention for a place in the knockout stages after losing to to South Africa and Madagascar in the first two matches.

Victoria Mkwala scored the first goal five minutes into the match before Jean Fyson doubled the lead two minutes later.

Captain Talandira Chinyamvula’s made it 3-0 at 22 minutes.

The Linda Kasenda side could not stop punishing their opponents as Fyson scored the fourth goal at 30 minutes.

Namibia who came into the match with no point from their two matches just like Malawi had one shot on target in the first half through Renalda Hangula which was cleared by Ireen Sibande .

Just as the teams were about to go for half time recess, Asimenye Mwanyongo scored Malawi’s fifth goal.

Nancy Lebang scored Namibia’s consolation goal at 76 minutes.

Fyson registered her hat trick of the match with six minutes to go and it ended 6-1.

Kasenda hailed his girls for the good show in the last match.

“We knew that we were already out of the tournament but we told the girls to play for their pride so that we at least go home with a win and the girls played according to instructions from the first whistle.

“We built from the back and created a lot of chances which the girls utilised and scored goals. There was much improvement in the girls today as compared to the previous two games because they wanted to go home with something to show”, said Kasenda.

 

Faluna Umali was named player of the match after the game.
