Wanderers, Bangwe battle for Airtel Top 8 semis slot

Mighty Mukuru Wanderers and Bangwe All Stars lock horns in the Airtel Top 8 quarterfinals second leg at Mpira Stadium in Chiwembe Township in Blantyre on Saturday.

At stake is a place in the semi-finals of the seventh edition of the Airtel Top 8.

Wanderers have an advantage  following a 1-0 victory in the first leg played at Kamuzu Stadium a forthright ago.

However, the tie is far from over as Bangwe can overturn the table if they better the first leg score line.

Bangwe will be looking to reach the semi-finals in their maiden appearance in the competition since they earned promotion and their  coach Trevor Kajawa said morale is high in camp ahead of the return leg.

“We have to use home ground advantage. We are going as under dogs but in cup games anything can happen. We will go  flat out and  do the right thing. Who knows, we can go to the next round if we beat Wanderers,’’ said Kajawa.

Wanderers coach Meke Mwase the players are ready for the game as they look forward to won back the cup they won in 2022.

’’We are not intimidated with Bangwe’s impressive form in recent matches. They will face a different team and we are eager for the game,’’ said Mwase.

The winners between the two sides will face either Silver Strikers or Premier Bet Dedza Dynamos in the semi-finals scheduled for next month.

The two teams face each other on Sunday at Dedza Stadium and Silver have an advantage  following 4-1 victory in the first leg at Silver Stadium. .

The remaining quarterfinals second leg matches will be played next month as Bullets will face Civil Service United at Civo Stadium while Kamuzu Barracks will meet Chitipa United at the same venue.

Bullets beat Civil 2-0 in the first leg while Chitipa also defeated KB by the same margin.

The winners between Bullets and Civil will face either KB or Chitipa in the semi-finals. The semi-finals will be played between October 26 and 27 at venues yet to be announced while the final is scheduled for November 3.
