Malawi have finished third at this year’s COSAFA U17 Girls’ Championship following a 9-0 win over Botswana in the third place play-off.

Linda Manda opened the score sheet two minutes into the match before Leticia Chinyamula came in with the second goal at 13 minutes.

Malawi pressurised Botswana dominating possession for almost the whole first half and were 6 goals up as the teams went for half time recess courtesy of braces from Leticia Chinyamula and Faith Chinzimu while the other two goals came from Linda Manda and Rose Kabzere.

Chinzimu claimed her hat trick just a minute into the second half as her shot passed the unsettled goalkeeper Gosego Mokola.

Botswana came in the second half with the hope to score some consolation goals but were for a number of times denied access by the defence and goalkeeper.

Sarah Mlimbika claimed a brace between 60 and 70 minutes.

Malawi’s Rose Kabzere leads the COSAFA U17 Girls’ Championship scorers’ chat with 8 goals, seconded by Faith Chinzimu who has 6 goals.

Coach Trevor Kajawa was happy with the girls’ achievement in their first International show.

“I am very excited for the win. The girls gave it all from the very first game and the future looks bright for Malawi Women’s football.

“Winning bronze in our debut cosafa is a plus. Going forward, it will be a great to keep the girls together because they are the future of Malawi Women’s football,” he said.
