FAM hails CAF president meet

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) says the Africa football associations presidents’ meeting with CAF president Patrice Motsepe in Doha, Qatar on Friday gave the members an opportunity to share ideas.

Motsepe took advantage of the Fifa Assembly to meet the Confederation of African Football (CAF) member associations’ presidents for the first time besides the CAF assembly since he was elected in March last year.

FAM president Walter Nyamilandu, who attended the meeting, said they tackled several issues affecting African football.

He said: “Essentially, it was a briefing on the upcoming competitions as well as a ‘question and answer’. It was an opportunity to interact, seek clarification and share ideas about Africa football development.”

After the meeting which Fifa president Gianni Infantino, Concacaf president Victor Montagliani and president of Conmebol Alejandro Dominguez also attended, Motspe stressed his commitment and the commitment of CAF to improve Africa football.

A CAF statement quoted Motsepe:  “I want to thank Fifa president Infantino, president Montagliani of Concacaf and Conmebol president Dominguez for joining our meeting and emphasising the commitment of all of us to partner and work together to develop and grow football in our continents and throughout the world.”

So far, Motsepe, a South African, has fulfilled some of his promises such as the introduction of the inaugural women’s Champions League, resolving television rights impasse with all CAF matches including African Cup of Nations. qualifiers, Champions League and Confederation Cup now televised after two years.

Motsepe has also increased sponsorship money for all CAF competitions while attracting other sponsors such as TikTok.
