Derbies in Airtel Top 8 Semifinals

The football fraternity will watch Lilongwe and Blantyre giants in the semifinals of the 2021 Airtel Top 8 Cup for the first time in the history of the tournament.

Capital City giants Silver Strikers and Civil Service United will meet in the semifinal of the competition next month whereas the other semifinal will involve Blantyre giants Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers.

It will be the second time for Bullets and Wanderers to clash at this stage having met in 2018 with Bullets wining 2-1.

Silver booked a semifinal berth after thrashing TN Stars 4-1 in the quarterfinal second leg at Chitowe Stadium Sunday, to progress 5-1 on aggregate.

Blessings Tembo scored a brace with the other goals coming from Stain Davie and Frank Banda. Fabio Kapinde scored the face saver for TN.

Silver Assistant Coach Macdonald Yobe said he anticipates a tough match against Civil.

“It will not be an easy match but we will prepare well for them,” said Yobe, who praised his troops for utilising their chances against Stars.

TN Coach Joseph Malizani admitted that his side did not come to the party.

“We made life difficult for ourselves when we conceded silly goals,” Malizani said.

Civil progressed to the semifinal after beating Karonga United 3-1 on aggregate.

Bullets knocked out Mafco 5-2 on aggregate whereas Wanderers dumped Moyale Barracks out of the competition 5-4 on post-match penalties.

Bullets will host Wanderers in the first Semifinal on Saturday December 4 at the Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre while Civo and Silver will meet on December 11 at a venue to be communicated.
