AFCON Trophy on display in BT

The 2021 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Trophy arrived in the country on Monday afternoon through Chileka Airport and is today being paraded around Blantyre City

FAM Broadcasting Marketing Manager Tulipo Mwenelupembe said the Trophy is being showcased in countries that have qualified for the forthcoming 2021 AFCON scheduled for Cameroon between January 9 and February 6 2022.

Coach Meck Mwase, who qualified the Flames for the AFCON has joined the parade.

“The main reason for the tour is to give a chance to local fans to appreciate how the trophy looks like and perhaps take photos with it. This is because CAF appreciates that though the competition is there to entertain the fans, most of them will not have the chance to be physically in Cameroon and watch the games live hence parading the trophy in all the qualified countries,” said Mwenelupembe.

The Trophy is expected to leave Malawi on Wednesday.

The Flames are in group B alongside Senegal, Zimbabwe and Guinea and will begin their campaign with a match against Guinea on January 10 before meeting Zimbabwe four days later. Malawi’s last group stage match will be played on January 18 at Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaunde, Cameroon.
