Scorchers ready for Banyana

The Malawi national women’s football team are set to open their 2021 Cosafa Women’s Championship when they face defending champions South Africa on Tuesday afternoon.

The scorchers will be looking for a first win over South Africa, who last year beat Malawi 6-2 in the semifinals.

Coach Mcnerbert Kadzuwa says his charges have what it takes to pull a surprise win over the tournament’s highly ranked team.

“We have never beaten South Africa before but that can change on Tuesday. According to the preparations that we had the girls are ready and the best worst result we are expecting is a draw.

“Last year no-one gave us a chance that we would beat Zambia but we did it. So, this time we are also fighting for victory because we want to go further.

“We have watched the recent games that our opponents played at the Aisha Buhari Cup and we know that it’s not going to be an easy task for us since they also defeated Nigeria in the final match. However, our girls are ready and this is the time for us to make that history,” he said.

Malawi also suffered 3-1 and 6-0 losses against South Africa in the 2019 and 2018 Cosafa Championships group stages.

The Scorchers will on October 1 play Mozambique in their second group stage encounter before meeting Angola on October 4th.
