FAM pays Tribute to Topsy Msuku

Football Association of Malawi AM has paid tribute to former Bata Bullets and Flames striker Topsy Msuku describing him as one of outstanding football talents of the post-independence Malawi.

Msuku died on Tuesday afternoon in South Africa at the age of 61. His son Ken said his father will be buried in South Africa at a date to be announced.

FAM President Walter Nyamilandu Manda said Msuku’s contribution to Malawi football development will be cherished forever as he played a big role in helping Bullets and Flames establish themselves as powerhouses in Malawi and Southern Africa respectively.

“He was an outstanding player for both club and country. He was part of the invisible Bullets that swept every silverware on offer in 1975.

“He was part of the Flames squad that went on to win the first international silverware when we lifted the 1978 CECAFA Championship. He also helped mentor upcoming players for both Bullets and Flames.

“These achievements helped populise football in Malawi and as such his name will always be in the books of Malawi football history

“In this sorrowful time, we would like to extend to the family of Msuku our heartfelt condolences. May our Lord comfort you and you’re loved ones in this trying time and May His Soul Rest in Peace,” said Nyamilandu Manda.

Msuku played 24 times for the Flames with 19 starts and five substitute appearances and scored three goals between 1975 and 1978.

He made his debut in a friendly match against Mauritius on 29 January 1975 as Flames won 1-0 courtesy of a Zoro Msiska’s lone strike.

He scored his first goal on 28th February 1976 when he claimed a brace in Flames’ 4-1 win over Lesotho in a friendly match in Blantyre.
