Scorchers 15 steps up on FIFA rankings

Scorchers at the Cosafa

The Malawi National Women’s Football Team have moved 15 places up on the FIFA Women’s Football World rankings released on December 18.

The Scorchers are now on position 130 in the World from 145 as of the previous ranking released in August.

Malawi have also moved three places up on the Continental rankings and are 21st in Africa and sixth in the COSAFA Region.

The rise could be attributed to the team’s top performance at the 2020 COSAFA Women’s Championship where the Scorchers reached the semifinals for the first time since 2011.

Scorchers Coach McNelbert Kazuwa said the rise on the rankings is a big boost to the growth of women’s football in the country.

“This is a morale booster to our team and having moved 15 steps up it shows that our girls have tremendously improved in the recent months.

“It is our hope that they will continue working hard. Our plea to the authority and Malawians is that they should continue supporting us so that we continue rising,” said Kazuwa.

During the COSAFA Championship Malawi beat Lesotho 9-0 and Zambia 1-0 in the group stages before losing 6-2 to South Africa in the Semifinal.
