The Malawi U-17 National team’s hopes for a place at the 2021 U-17 CAF Africa Cup of Nations are over following a 7-1 defeat to Angola on Thursday.

With the loss Malawi have finished bottom of the group with a single point while Zambia who beat South have finished top of the Round Robin phase with nine points and have together with South Africa qualified for AFCON.

Vicente Domingos opened the score for Angola in the 29th minute before Custodio Hequele scored a brace within a space of two minutes.

Angola led 3-0 at half time. Hequele registered his hat-trick through a penalty in the 66th following a bad tackle on an Angolan player by Prince Minandi.

Samson Zakeyu pulled one back for Malawi 14 minutes later.

Armindo Canji scored Angola’s fifth in the 82nd minute before Alexandre Cacuo and Osvaldo Inga scored a goal each in added time.

“It was a tough game from the start. The Angolans never gave us a chance because we lacked pace as compared to them. We just need to have a psychological talk with the boys because we have another game against then thiscoming Sunday,” said Malawi coach Dekrek Msakakuona.
