2023 FAM Districts Leagues launch Saturday

The FAM Districts Football Leagues’ third edition will be launched on Saturday 28th October, 2023 at the Champion Stadium in Mponela, Dowa.

FAM President Walter Nyamilandu Manda will preside over the launch, which will be spiced up by a Dowa District League match between Tchawale City FC and Kalembelembe FC.

The Association’s Competitions and Communications Director Gomezgani Zakazaka said FAM is excited with the return of the Districts Leagues whose package has been increased from K60 million to K 90 million.

“Last season just like the inaugural season in 2021 was a success, and we would like to commend the Regional FAs and the Districts Football Committees for a job well done in executing the Leagues.

“We are achieving our goal of putting in place a systematic football development structure to enable unearthing of talent from the rural areas.

“The return of the competition is a sign that FAM is committed to develop rural football and Raise the Bar by putting more effort on the Districts and Regional Football which act as feeder leagues to elite football,”

“Our Football has struggled to reach its full potential in the past as we spent more time and energy on the Elite Football and ignored the lower end. But these Leagues have changed that as  they have helped us put in place a cross cutting agenda of bottom-up in order to develop raw talented player,” said Zakazaka.

Central Region Football Association chairperson Austin Ajawa says the launch will help bring together football loving Malawians in the region and promote grassroot football.

“As one way of according an opportunity to all  football lovers in Central Region to interact with Football Association of Malawi (FAM) dignitaries, there will be no charges at the stadium gate” said Ajawa.

Each district is expected to register a maximum of 32 teams who will play in two phases. In the first phase the teams will be divided into eight groups of four teams and will play a round robin of  One round (Each team playing against each other once). The top team in each group will qualify for the second phase to be played on knockout basis from quarterfinals.
