2016 Carlsberg Cup Discovery of the Season Nominees

 

The Football Association of Malawi  has released the nominees for the 2016 Discovery of the season award.
This is the award given to a player who was unknown but has made a name following exploits in the Carlsberg Cup.
The Sports Writers Association of Malawi( SWAM) will scrutinise the three  nominees and come up with the winner by Friday 9th September 2016.
The award comes with a Prize money of K200,000.00
Below are the nominees.
Name: Collen Nkhulambe
Position: Attacking Midfielder
Club: Mzuzu United ( Northern Region Football League)
Date of Birth: 4th April 1993
The attacking midfielder was the heart and soul of Mzuzu United as they reached the Round of 16 of the Carlsberg Cup. He scored in all the matches his team played.
He scored a goal in their one all draw with Wizards FC which they lost one penalties 3-1. He was the only one from his team who scored in the penalty shootout and was voted man of the match. Nkhulambe hit a brace in the team’s first match against Kabwafu which ended 2-2 ( Mzuzu United won 7-6 on penalties) He also scored an equaliser as Mzuzu United drew 1-1 with Mzuni and went on to score the winning penalty as they triumphed 4-3 on penalty shootout.
His exploits in the Carlsberg got him noticed with Super League teams chasing for his signature. No surprise he has managed a dream move to Nyasa Big Bullets.
 
Name: George Chauya
Position: Goalkeeper
Club: Mangochi Police
Date of Birth : 25th December 1988
Mangochi Police FC fairytale run to the semifinal of the Carlsberg Cup semifinal is largely credited to the performance of goalkeeper George Chauya. He kept clean sheets in four of the six games he played in the competition. He saved crucial penalties to lead his team to three penalty shootout victories against MDF Marine in the second round of the Regional Preliminaries, Chikhwawa United in the round of 32 and Wizard FC in the Quarterfinals. He was in top form as he denied Mighty Be Forward Wanderers a goal in the first half of the semifinal match. He was substituted at half time due to an injury and Mangochi United went to concede in the second half and lost the match 1-0. He is on the verge of signing for Blue Eagles.
 
Name: Moses Phiri
Position: Goalkeeper
Club: Prison United
Date of Birth: 23rd October 1990
The goalkeeper was in top form as he kept four clean sheets in six games and conceded only 2 goals. He won three consecutive man of the match awards from round of 32 to quarterfinal against Epac, Zomba United and Mighty Be Forward Wanderers.
