Hosts Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe are finalizing their preparations ahead of the kick off of the Tri-Nation Women’s Football Tournament at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe this Friday.
The three teams will battle for supremacy from Friday until December 2 in Malawi’s capital.
With a day before the kick off of the football fiesta, the fans are buzzing with excitement as there will be free entry to the stadium for standard stands.
It will be an action-packed five days of women’s football as talent from the three nations will be on display. Hosts Malawi will be looking to utilise home ground advantage when they face Zimbabwe’s Mighty Warriors in the opening match on Friday evening.
The two nations have made remarkable strides in developing women’s football at all levels. The tournament will offer the three teams a perfect opportunity to fine-tune ahead of the Cosafa Women’s Championship early next year.
Both Malawi and Zambia will also use the tournament as part of their preparations for the 2026 Caf TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) finals to be staged from March 17 to April in Morocco.
Malawi will be looking prove that their qualification to the 2026 WAFCON finals was not by a fluke. The Scorchers qualified for the finals after beating Angola 2-0 at Bingu National Stadium after the first leg had ended goal-less in Luanda, Angola. The Copper Queens, on the other hand, go into the Tri-Nation Tournament as one of the favourites. They qualified for the WAFCON finals following 7-2 victory on aggregate over Namibia.
The Mighty Warriors, on the other hand, have made good progress in recent times despite missing a ticket to the WAFCON finals having lost to Angola 5-4 on post-match penalty after 3-3 on aggregate.
Pride will also be at stake as the three nations face each other. The Scorchers will face Zambia in their second and final match on Sunday. But the tournament will reach its climax with the fixture between Zambia and Zimbabwe on Tuesday, December 2, 2025.
