The Malawi National Women’s Football team need to be at their best in front of the goal and score more goals this afternoon against Mauritius to boost their chances of making it to the last four of the Cosafa Women’s Championship in Gqeberha, South Africa.
The Scorchers are second in Group B behind Botswana on goal difference as the leaders have a positive goal return of five against Malawi’s one.
The two sides cannot be separated on head-to-head following their one all draw in the opening match and goal difference will matter thus the need for the Scorchers to up their game and score more goals to better Botswana’s goal count.
Coach Lovemore Fazili is positive that his girls will deliver against the Islanders who have only scored once and conceded 10 goals, five each against Madagascar and Botswana.
“We have worked on our attack which has been the weakest link in the past two matches. Looking at how our table is, we need to score more goals to boost our chances of progressing to the next level,” he said.
In the first match against Botswana, Fazili trusted the services of foreign-based players Vanessa Chikupira and Mary Chavinda upfront who were substituted for Chisomo Banda and Catherine Kachala at half time.
Against Madagascar, Sabina Thom and Catherine Kachala started upfront with Tendai Sani replacing Kachala later on but the team has only produced two goals.
“We have tried a number of combinations in striking force since most of the girls have never played together and come Monday, we will use the best combination that we have seen”, said Fazili.
As the Scorchers will be taking on Mauritius at Madibaz, Botswana and Madagascar will be meeting at Wolfson Stadium in the group’s deciding matches which will see one of the three teams (Botswana, Madagascar and Malawi) proceeding to the knockout stage depending on the outcomes.
