Football Association of Malawi (FAM) is the governing body of football in Malawi and was founded in 1966 with its main mission of effectively organizing, administering, developing and controlling the game of football in consistent with FIFA rules and regulations in a manner that will continuously improve the standard of football in the country. FAM is affiliated to FIFA, CAF, COSAFA and the Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS). FAM manages all Malawi national Football, Beach, Futsal teams for both men and Women. FAM is inviting applications from suitably qualified and experienced people to fill the positions of Chief Operations Officer tenable at its Head Office in Blantyre.

Job Summary

This position is responsible for directing and controlling all organizational operations in accordance with the strategy and business plans agreed by the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Committee to ensure that organizational goals and objectives are met. The successful candidate will be offered a 3-year renewable performance-based contract.

General Description

Reporting to the General Secretary (CEO), the incumbent will be responsible for fostering of implementation of the FAM strategic goals as set by Executive committee through policy guidelines and standards regulations for governance of the Association.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Direct and control all internal operational employees to ensure that they are appropriately motivated and trained and carry out their responsibilities to the required standard.
  • Contribute to the development of the Association’s corporate strategy and lead strategy development in all organizational operations to ensure that the company achieves its short and long-term objectives.
  • Collaborate with CEO in driving Association’s vision, operations strategy, and governance processes.
  • Translate strategy into actionable steps for growth, implementing organization-wide goal setting, performance management, and annual operations planning
  • Oversee operations and employee productivity, building a highly inclusive culture that ensures team members can thrive and that organizational goals are met
  • Ensure effective recruiting, onboarding, professional development, performance management, and retention
  • Act as a strategic partner on the leadership team and work closely with the team to ensure they are meeting performance expectations.
  • Devise methods to improve quality, efficiency and productivity, reduce costs, increase profits, or improve control measures.
  • Provide timely, accurate and complete reports on the operating condition of the Association.
  • Motivate and lead a high-performance management team.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to take on new tasks with a general attitude that no task is too small, impossible, or cannot be improved.
  • Represent the Association with clients, investors, and business partners.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, COMPETENCES AND EXPERIENCE

Education and Experience

  • A degree in management, sports management, or a related field required with a minimum of 5 years of management experience.
  • Those with a master’s degree with minimum of 3 years of senior management experience will have an added advantage.
  • In-depth understanding of the football industry including risk management, compliance, and regulatory requirements
  • In-depth understanding of accounting principles including budgeting, balance sheets, income statements, cash flow, and capital planning management will be an added advantage.
  • Demonstrated strategic leadership ability

Other Required Knowledge and additional Competences 

  • Excellent leadership skills, with steadfast resolve and personal integrity
  • Understanding of advanced business planning and regulatory issues
  • Fundraising experience
  • International business experience
  • Must have effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Must have good analytical skills and decision-making ability.
  • Must be able to work independently and multi-task, prioritizing as appropriate.
  • Must be available to work during odd hours.
