The Malawi National Women’s Team are out of this year’s Cosafa Women’s Championship after going down 6-2 to South Africa on Thursday afternoon.

Malawi suffered an early blow as Goalkeeper Samir Amidu was shown a red card in the 18th Minute for a bad tuckle over Hildah Thoalkele Magaia.

Striker Asimenye Simwaka was sacrificed for Mercy Sikelo, the reserve keeper.

With one player down, Scorchers kept on fighting until the half time whistle blew with no goal registered in both side.

Banyana Banyana came back stonger in the second half and Mapula Kgoale finally got the opener in in the 51st minute .

Temwa Chawinga put Malawi back on level terms two minutes later from superb direct free kick .

Hildah Thoalkele Magaia claimed her brace in the 62nd minute before Mapula Kgoale made it 3-0 two minutes.

The hosts continued enjoying the rest of the second half lead by Kgoale and Magaia as Sibulele Holweni also netted in her goal before Scorchers Captain Tabitha Chawinga scored her 7th goal for the tournament making it 6-2 by the final whistle.

Coach McNelbert Kazuwa attributed the team’s loss to the early red card given to Goalkeeper Samir Amidu.

“The result is very unfortunate to us. We didn’t expect to lose with such a margin because we trained very hard, our charges were ready to surprise South Africa but football is unpredictable and that is what has happened to us today.

“It has been a very good experience for us to reach the semifinals after a long time and we are targeting go up to the finals next time we come for the tournament,” he said
