Flames lose to Senegal

FULL TIME

Senegal 2 (Abou Diop 11′ 90+2′) -1 Malawi (Khuda Myaba 34′)

The Flames on Thursday afternoon conceded in stoppage time to lose 2-1 to Senegal in their last COSAFA Cup group B match.

With the match at 1-1 and seemingly ending in a draw Abou Diop headed the winner, his second on the day, in added time to hand the West Africans maximum points and a place in the last four.

Diop opened scored the opener in the 11 minute but substitute Khuda Myaba brought Malawi level just two minutes after he was introduced for injured Zicco Mkanda in the 32nd minute..

Malawi have failed to register a win at this year’s Cosafa Cup tournament after a 2-2 draw with Zimbabwe in their opening match, followed by a 2-0 loss to Mozambique and a 1-1 draw against Namibia.

Coach Meck Mwase said though his team failed to get positive results, the tournament has helped him identify players who are ready for upcoming World Cup Qualifiers and Africa Cup of Nations assignment.

“We had a very good tournament though we didn’t get the results that we wanted. We have however achieved what we wanted to use the tournament to see players who are ready to be with us during the forthcoming assignments,” he said.

Lineup: Richard Chimbamba, Stanley Sanudi, Nickson Mwase, Taonga Chimodzi, Denis Chembezi, Micium Mhone, Zicco Mkanda (Khuda Myaba 32′), Mike Mkwate (Chimwemwe Idana 74′), Maxwell Phodo, Vitumbiko Kumwenda (Micheck Selemani (30′), Eric Kaonga
